A representative from Kupwesh School said: “It is a shame that our principal doesn’t recognise our history and history of tolerance and inclusion. We support a community and support our students to be inclusive of these issues of religious intolerance and discrimination”.

The news comes a day after a prominent South African politician, Othman Dlamini, said it would have been “highly irresponsible” for his country to target a Muslim student, who was raised in a family of Muslims.

Dlamini wrote in The Straits Times that South Africa must continue to be the host of a safe, open and tolerant society, and it had an obligation to ensure that children and youth had the right to be safe.

A representative from the school said: “We support a community that works together in tackling the problems of Muslim intolerance and discrimination.

“What we know about the history and tradition of our country is that it never was afraid of an extreme religious viewpoint. We have strong tolerance and respect for our traditions and beliefs. We do not tolerate acts of terrorism, bigotry, or other hate-motivated acts at our school.”
