On Monday afternoon before closing time, Mayor Mike Duggan announced the city would consider selling the Detroit Center For Creative Public Art in Eastman Square (which serves as one of Woodward’s many high-rise residential centers) for a total of up to $60 million, and that an additional $100 million is to be paid out to the City of Detroit. While this is part of a larger $25 million investment in Detroit by the Detroit Business Council, the proposal is unlikely to pass at all.
So when that happens, the public art is likely to be moved to another vacant area in the River Valley. So why not move it back to its former location? “At this point, the city is not in a position to provide support, because it’s not a place where the cost of public art will be prohibitive,” wrote an attorney for the Detroit Center for City and Community Development in February.
This move won’t mean much if there is no immediate political threat from the mayor. “The city would need to find a way to resolve this issue through a referendum,” Duggan told the AP on
